1984

Formation of the Working Group for Paediatric Education and Training consisting of heads of paediatric units of hospitals under the Department of Medical & Health Services.

1985

Annual Part II Clinical Examination of the Royal College of Physicians (UK) in Paediatrics extended to be held (outside UK) in Hong Kong, initially co-ordinated by the University of Hong Kong.

1986

Paediatric Chapter of the newly instituted Hong Kong College of Physicians.

1989

Publication of the "Objectives of Postgraduate Paediatric Education and Training for Hong Kong" (Blue Book), by the Working Group.

1991

30 senior paediatricians incorporated the Hong Kong College of Paediatricians.

Inauguration of the Hong Kong College of Paediatricians with 179 Founding Fellows and 54 Members.

1993

Hong Kong College of Paediatricians became one of the fourteen Founding Academy Colleges of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine.

Formal establishment of the Conjoint Membership Examination with the Royal College of Physicians (UK).

1996

The 1st Guangdong/Hong Kong Paediatric Exchange Meeting was held in Guangzhou and it was decided that this meeting would be a biannual event.

The Hong Kong Journal of Paediatrics − New Series became the official publication of the Hong Kong College of Paediatricians and the Hong Kong Paediatric Society with Prof. CY Yeung as the Chief Editor

Continued collaboration with the existing Royal Colleges of Physicians of United Kingdom and the newly formed Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health

1997

The Hong Kong Paediatric Society and the Hong Kong College of Paediatricians jointly organised the 9th Asian Congress of Paediatrics in Hong Kong with 1,700 participants from around the world.

Hong Kong College of Paediatricians Foundation established.

1999

Our College participated in the First National Symposium on Paediatric Medical Education in Shanghai.

Annual Paediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Course jointly organised by our College and the Heart Institute for Children, Hope Children Hospital of Illinois, USA with the help of Dr. Alfred HuYoung.

2000

Strategic Planning Workshop and one of the resolutions was that every paediatrician should be adequately trained in general paediatrics and child health.

Establishment of the Task Force for Higher Training in Paediatric Subspecialties under the leadership of Dr. CW Chan.

Dr. Patricia Ip awarded the C. Henry Kempe Award by the International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect. Prof. CY Yeung, Prof. NK Leung and Dr. CW Chan honoured as "Outstanding Paediatricians of Asia" by the Association of Pediatric Societies of Southeast Asia Region at the 10th Asian Congress of Paediatric in Taipei.

2001

Donation of three million dollars by the Providence Foundation to establish the HM Lui Memorial Fund to promote study and research in liver diseases and other paediatric disciplines in children.

Official visit of the American Academy of Pediatrics led by Dr. Louis Cooper, President-elect and Dr. Joe Sander Jr., Executive Director of AAP.

Our College dedicated the 10th Anniversary Scientific Meeting with the theme of "Primary Health Care in Paediatrics" to highlight the College's emphasis on primary care for children and child health. Invited guests came from China, Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore, United Kingdom and United States.

2002

Urumqi-Hong Kong Paediatric Exchange Meeting was held in Urumqi, Xijiang and College Fellows visited Xijiang Urumqi Children's Hospital.

2003

Mandatory Training in accredited Maternal and Child Health/Child Assessment Centre for all Associates entering into basic training.

Prof. TF Fok honoured as "Outstanding Paediatrician of Asia" at the 11th Asian Congress of Pediatrics in Bangkok, Thailand.

2005

Hong Kong Journal of Paediatrics : New Series listed on EMBASE.

2006

Annual Neonatal Resuscitation Programme in Kunming established by the Hong Kong College of Paediatricians Foundation under the able leadership of Dr. Vincent Leung, Dr. KL Cheung and Dr. MC Chan.

2007

Publication of the revised "Guidelines on Postgraduate Training and Accreditation".

Donation of one million dollars by the Providence Foundation to the HM Lui Memorial Fund.

Hong Kong College of Paediatricians Foundation Neonatal Resuscitation Programme in Xining, Qinghai Province and Exchange Meeting at the Peoples Hospital of Lhasa of the Tibet Autonomous Region.

Three senior paediatricians from the Children's Hospital of Fudan University visited our College in preparation for the accreditation of paediatric training in China which was officially launched by Prof. JF Wang, Vice-Minister of Health of the People's Republic of China in Beijing in May 2008.

Dr. Chan Chok Wan commenced his Presidency of IPA for the term 2007-2010 after the IPA Congress at Athens, Greece in August 2007.

Prof. Patrick Yuen was honoured as "Outstanding Paediatrician of Asia" at the 12th Asian Pacific Congress of Pediatrics".

2008

The Hong Kong Journal of Paediatrics: New Series has been included in Thomson Science Citation Index since January, 2008.

Collaboration with Ministry of Health (MOH) on Specialist Registration in Mainland China. Our College was one of the four pilot specialties selected by MOH to start the pilot programme of specialist training and registration in Mainland China. Our President represented the College to attend a "kick-off" ceremony of the pilot scheme in Beijing on 18 April 2008. The Academy President, Vice President (Education & Examinations), Academy's advisors on the Working Group, representatives from the other pilot Colleges of Dental Surgeons, Ophthalmologists, and Orthopaedic Surgeons attended the ceremony.

Donations to victims in the Sichuan Earthquake. The College in conjunction with the Hong Kong College of Paediatricians Foundation, had appealed to members for donations to form a Sichuan Earthquake Relief Fund. A total of HK$365,500 donation was received. In collaboration with the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, the fund was used in projects providing social and psychological counseling service to children in the affected areas in Sichuan.

7th Guangdong/Hong Kong Paediatric Exchange Meeting was extended to include paediatricians from Shanghai and Chongqing to inaugurate the 1st Hong Kong, Guangdong, Shanghai, Chongqing Paediatric Exchange Meeting.

Formation of the Working Group on the Accreditation of Higher Training in Paediatric Subspecialties.

Visit by the Oman Medical Specialty Board.

The Hong Kong Academy of Medicine celebrated its 15th Anniversary with the hosting of a Scientific Programme. Our College had invited colleagues from different parts of China to participate in the meeting and join us in the celebrations. The milestones of our College had been published in the Academy's 15th Anniversary Commemorative Publication.

2009

Implementation of the new training curriculum of 3-month training each in MCHC and CAS in the Basic Training Programme.

The College Council endorsed an amendment of the Byelaws by adding a section on "Subspecialty Affairs" (Section 10). The logistics of appointment of the Director of Subspecialty Boards and the Committee for Subspecialty Boards were laid down, as well as the vetting procedures for applications for establishing subspecialty programmes.

Implementation of the new training requirement of Child Protection Course to be included for the Fellowship of the Hong Kong College of Paediatricians.

2010

With the consent from RCPCH, six senior paediatricians from the Mainland observed the MRCPCH Clinical Examination in February this year. The College was pleased to learn that the basic format of the clinical examination would be adopted in selective centres for postgraduate training in the Mainland. This outcome reflected the successful and productive collaboration between the Ministry of Health (China), the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine and our College on the development and accreditation of medical specialties in the Mainland.

A meeting was successfully held with Mr. Shane Solomon (HA), Dr. Lam Ping Yan (DH), the Chairs of the Department of Paediatrics of the two Universities (Prof. YL Lau and Prof. PC Ng) and Dr. Li Chi Kong (Chairman of COC, HA), to seek understanding and blessing of all the institute stakeholders involved in paediatric service and training in Hong Kong with regard to allocation of resources and staff for training. The invited parties readily indicated support to facilitate implementation of paediatric subspecialisation.

The Council appointed, with acceptance by Dr. Chan Chok Wan to be the Director of Subspecialty Boards under the College Byelaw Section 10: Subspecialty Affairs.

Our President, jointly with representatives of the HKAM and all sister Colleges, at the First Tripartite Congress of the HKAM, Academy of Medicine of Malaysia and Academy of Medicine of Singapore held in Hong Kong signed a New Charter on the Promotion of Treatment of Tobacco Dependence on 13th November 2010.

2011

The RCPCH will implement a new format of DCH Clinical Examination starting from April 2011. The major changes are the introduction of two new stations, Data Interpretation Station and Safe Prescribing Station. The Hong Kong Centre will adopt the new syllabus starting from the October 2011 DCH Clinical Examination.

Our College commemorated the 20th Anniversary with a whole day event. There will be a 20th Anniversary Scientific Meeting including the HM Lui Memorial Fund Symposium celebrating its 10th Anniversary since the establishment of the Fund. The theme of the Scientific Meeting is "Recent Advances in Paediatrics". This will be followed by the AGM and Fellowship Conferment Ceremony and a Celebration Dinner. Eminent international guests will come from China (Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing and Guangdong), the United Kingdom, Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan and Macau.

The HM Lui Memorial Fund celebrated its 10th Anniversary of the establishment of the Fund by inviting past Fellows from China and Hong Kong to take part in the HM Lui Memorial Fund Symposium on 10th December 2011.

2012

The College, in collaboration with the Hong Kong Society of Neonatal Medicine and the Hong Kong Paediatric Nurses' Association, organised a Neonatal Resuscitation Programme, with Provider and Instructor Courses held in the first half of the year 2012.

After many years of preparation, the College accredited the Subspecialty of Paediatric Immunology and infectious Diseases with the expert advice of Prof. Andrew Cant from University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne in July 2012. This was approved by the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine. The Medical Council of Hong Kong added the Specialty of PIID in its Specialist Register in December 2012. There were four accredited Training Centres were. A total of 13 First Fellows were admitted.

2013

The College accredited the Subspecialty of Developmental-Behavioural Paediatrics with the expert advice of Prof. Ellen Perrin from Tuft University School of Medicine Boston in January 2013. This was approved by the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine. The Medical Council of Hong Kong has added the Specialty of DBP in its Specialist Register in July 2013. Seven Training Centres were accredited. A total of 25 First Fellows were admitted.

A new and enhanced website of the College was launched on 18th February 2013.

The College accredited the Subspecialty of Paediatric Neurology with the expert advice of Prof. Robert Ouvrier from Children's Hospital at Westmead, Sydney in July 2013. Ten Paediatric Units were accredited as training centres for various durations. Thirty-two First Fellows will be admitted after approval by the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine.

In July 2013, the College revised its Training Curriculum to make it mandatory for trainees to complete the Neonatal Resuscitation Programme course during the Basic Paediatric Training.

A Scientific and Research Subcommittee was set up under the Education Committee to enhance research training and promote science and research through organizing scientific meetings, collaborative research network and other activities. The first Annual Scientific Meeting was held on 7th December 2013.
